Männäinen was already a significant centre of commerce in Finland in the early Finnish Middle Ages. This was in no small part due to the vast industry built around wooden pots and eating vessels, for which the people of Vakka-Suomi were known throughout northern Europe. In the 1700s an ironworks was founded in Männäinen, and the ore required for it was shipped in from Sweden by sailing ship and delivered to the mouth of the river at Torlahti. There the ore was loaded onto barges, which brought it along the river to the ironworks. The finished iron was shipped back to Sweden for further refinement. There was also a liquor factory, a brewery, a dairy and a mill in the ironworks grounds. The ironworks area is situated just near the local history museum, at the junction of Männäistenkoskentie and Pruukintie, around 200 m north of the museum. The actual market place was once in the place where the local history museum now stands.
