The people of Vakka-Suomi were active seafarers, and there have also been shipwrecks over the centuries. There are around twenty discovered sunken ships in the area. Some of them reach from their watery graves above the waterline, such as at Hiunpuhti. From Lepäistentie you can catch a glimpse of the bow of the frigate Osmo out in the bay. There’s a story behind every sunken vessel – as well as the ship itself, shipwrecks often claimed lives and cargo. Ships have also been sunk when they reach the end of their useful life. Indeed, there are many more wrecks lying in the depths than those that have been identified.
