Completed in 1891, the Katarauma Bridge connected the people of the islands with the mainland. Many stories are told about the bridge; according to one such story, neither a living bull nor a sane person ever crossed the bridge. It is also said that there was no point in the boys from the mainland trying to come and entice the fair maidens from the islands to their dances, for their journeys would be cut short at the Katarauma Bridge, where young islanders waited with blocks of wood ready to knock out anyone who tried.
