Hiunjärvi lake is located north of the centre of Uusikaupunki and, despite its close proximity to the town, has remained peaceful and undeveloped. The lake has a surface area of approximately 12 ha, of which about a third is overgrown wetland. Hiunjärvi lake is a regionally significant bird lake with a large variety of nesting birds considering the size of the lake. Due to its close proximity to the town, the lake has been used for educational and recreational purposes, and there is a marked nature trail in the area including a bivouacs and a bird tower.
One of the access points to the trail is a tunnel near Saarnisto school as well as at the end of Juolukkatie and Otavakuja. The distance from the tunnel to the bivouacs is about 1 km. The longest route from the tunnel is about 3.8 km and the shortest about 3.2 km. The distance from the end of Juolukkatie to the bivouacs approximately 0.7 km. The longest route from Juolukkatie is about 3.6 km and the shortest about 1.4 km. The two shortest routes to the bivouacs start at the end of Otavakuja and both are about 1.4 km long. Also a longer route, about 3.3 km, starts from there, and another shorter one, about 2.8 km. The trail is marked with orange diamonds and you can find maps at the starting point and crossroads.
