The Endless Burden of an Uneducated Person - Jori Tapio Kalliolan art exhibition

Culture center Crusell, Kullervontie 11A, 23500 Uusikaupunki

Jori Tapio Kalliola has been selected as the ITE Artist of the Year 2021 by the Rural Cultural Association. He is a self-taught outsider and ITE artist who has emerged from outside the official art world. Kalliola creates his art from recycled materials, such as old logs, doors, stage set screens, metal and wood scraps, and surplus paints from hardware stores. His works are thought-provoking, forcing people with all their tragicomic traits to reflect on their actions in an atheist's confessional. They highlight the foolishness that only a human ape, with its endless imagination, can conceive.

"We have an ideal notion of a learning human being. A person whose life is filled with intriguing curiosity and learning. Education moves a person forward; it broadens their perspective and educates them. But how does it always end up? Despite all progressiveness, humans seem unable to learn from their mistakes. Greed, lust for power, selfishness, warlike nature, nationalism, mass psychoses, and other follies crush all learned knowledge, all that from which we should have learned long ago."

At the Cruselli Cultural Center's Liljelund Hall in Uusikaupunki, Kalliola's sculptures and paintings from this year and previous years will be on display, as even his older works are more relevant now than when they were created.

The artist will not hold an opening reception for the exhibition.

"When almost all the works in the exhibition highlight the misery and war caused by uneducated people, it would be grotesque to clink champagne glasses and nibble on chips. It's better for visitors to enjoy or be offended privately, and I can lie in the field with a straw in my mouth."
