Crusell - Mozart - Weber

Bernhard Henrik Crusell's (1775-1838) Concerto for French Horn was first performed in 1810 at the Knight's Hall in Stockholm by Johann Hirschfeld with the Royal Orchestra Hofkapellet. The concerto was performed in the 1810s and 1820s in Sweden and Germany by three different soloists. The work was long thought to have been lost, but since then a solo part written by Crusell and arrangements for smaller ensembles have been found. Based on these archival finds, composer and musicologist Johanna Eränkö Hyytinen reconstructs the concerto, which will now receive its Finnish premiere during Crusell Music Festival 2024.

Crusell's Concerto for French Horn is very virtuosic for the soloist and is reminiscent in style of Crusell's early clarinet concertos. It is a very important addition to the Finnish French horn literature, as the next Finnish French horn concerto was not composed until more than 150 years later, in the 1970s.
