Supervision
The supervisory tasks of the municipal environmental protection authority include, for example, monitoring activities subject to environmental permits and activities subject to registration as well as carrying out regular periodical inspections.
According to the Environmental Protection Act, the supervisory authority must implement the supervision in a high-quality, regular, and efficient manner and based on environmental risk assessment. In addition to Uusikaupunki, the Uusikaupunki environmental protection area also includes Vehmaa, Taivassalo and Kustavi.
Uusikaupunki's environmental protection supervision authority monitors approximately 140 operators that require environmental permits and approximately 20 operators that require soil permits. In addition, environmental protection supervision also monitors all registered operators, notifications under to the Environmental Protection Act, environmental protection regulations, as well as compliance with the Waste Act and tasks related to wastewater from scattered settlements.
Littering
According to the Waste Act (646/2011), no waste, discarded machinery, devices, vehicles, vessels or other objects may be left in the environment. According to the law, it is also prohibited to release any substances into the environment in such a way that they may cause disorder, make the landscape uglier or less enjoyable, cause risk of injury to persons or animals, or other comparable dangers or harm.
The ban on littering applies to all areas, both private and public. It is the responsibility of the litterer to clean up littered areas. The municipal environmental protection authority can order any litterers to fulfil their cleaning obligations. Known litterers can also be reported to the police. Property owners may also file a criminal report on such matters.
